美國耶魯大學文藝復興系博士。其研究領域為文藝復興與巴洛克時代比較文學，目前任教於台灣大學外國語文學系。其著作包括Sexual Shakespeare: Forgery, Authorship, Portraiture (2001)、The Pretended Asian: George Psalmanazar's Eighteenth-Century Formosan Hoax (2004)與The Story of a Stele: China's Nestorian Monument and Its Reception in the West, 1625-1916 (2008)等。
